Music Theory Tutor, Teacher, Instructor
With an enthusiastic and creative character, I specialise in inspiring musical interest from the very beginning. I strive for maximum performance from pupils and have a strong track record in all aspects of musical education. My holistic approach to the subject achieves the highest results under the Royal Schools of Music Exam Board [ABRSM] whilst also keeping the subject light and fun. I have a natural flair for educating and also teach horse-riding to children in my spare time.
Some benefits of your son/daughter learning to play an instrument:
· Engaging left and right brain function
· Developing motor-neuron skills and coordination
· Enhancing communication skills through reading, writing and performing music
· Aural skills will help to develop rhythm and timing
Academy students can learn purely for pleasure and educational enhancement, but if they would like to take graded exams which carry UKCC and UCAS points, they can do this through JQ Music Academy. I have a 100% pass rate at examination in both Performance and The Theory of Music - 95% of students attain the higher grades. Online tuition is available.
There will be regular progress reports, sticker rewards each week and medals each term for the most hard-working students. Success is measured on effort, not ability to ensure fairness across the board. Students will have the the opportunity to play at bi-annual concerts at a local venue with my other academy students. You will be able to communicate with me directly regarding you/your child’s progress and we can discuss opportunities for performances and examinations.

I have taught instrumental music to a wide range of ages including adults. I teach most instruments, including theory of music, and believe that music should be enjoyed in which case I teach towards ABRSM and British College of Accordionists examinations in addition to supplementing this with playing for pleasure and enjoyment music. My experience is that individuals should be taught according to their individual learning style and therefore I adapt my teaching style to match the age, stage, interest and needs of the students which means that if the student wants to learn for pure enjoyment then examinations may not be considered.
My students have enjoyed many successes at national level and some have gone on to study music at University.

Trudi started playing the flute at the age of 8 years old where she quickly joined the Birmingham Conservatoire under the instruction of Bernard Herrman (BBC Northern Dance Band, The Good Old Days)
While studying there Trudi gained her Flute ABRSM grades 1 - 8 and shortly afterwards gained the Advanced Certificate (now DipABRSM)
She was a member of the Birmingham Chamber Orchestra and the Birmingham Conservatoire Symphony Orchestra.
Teaching and performing in Germany for the British Forces Schools lasted some years before returning to the UK where she has her own music studio in the heart of Rugby.

- First lesson is full length, but half price - to see if we're a good fit for each other.
"Highly Recommended! Michael is focused, passionate and fun to work with. His conducting experience brings a unique dimension to his approach to teaching piano. If you're looking for a teacher who knows how to help his students enhance the musicality of every aspect of their playing with the technical knowhow to accomplish it, you couldn't do better." - Jonathan S.
I'm a Royal College of Music trained conductor and pianist, and this informs all my coaching, whether piano, theory, aural skills or otherwise. Over the years, I've taught and mentored students of different ages – from bright six-year-olds to curious 66-year-olds. My students are of different abilities ranging from complete beginners through to university/conservatoire level.
Whether you want to play the piano or delve deeper into music theory, my motto is ‘making music live’ and guiding others to express themselves through music. I’m fully invested in helping my students accomplish their goals and develop a passion for music. I love watching my students progress and I have a 100% pass rate for all ABRSM grades, most of whom have gained distinctions.
'Filling in the gaps'. Sight-reading is a common stumbling block for students. As a child I was a terrible sight-reader but as a professional musician I've managed to overcome this, and I've now developed a structured way to teach sight-reading so it’s more accessible and fun for my students. Similarly, I continue to explore ways to keep sessions interesting so students sustain an interest and learn better with things like technique, scales, theory and aural skills. I believe that when included in lessons simply as part of music-making, they stop being intimidating and start becoming inspiring.
Having taught students with different learning paces, I’ve realised that when a certain lesson or session seems challenging, it’s not because a student can’t do it. Every student has a specific learning capacity and I make sure that my method and approach is personalised and I provide abundant motivation. It's always satisfying to overcome a challenge and suddenly be able to do something you never thought possible.
While I can now teach in person, since Covid-19, I began currently teaching online and have actually found it a very effective way to teach. With the student’s permission, all lessons are recorded giving the student great resource to draw on, personalised to them. Combined with my multi-camera setup and the ability to repeat watch, in many ways it makes it easier to demonstrate a technical challenge than in person.
I offer a 10% discount for students that pre-pay for 10 classes. If your musical skills have become rusty or if you want to start your musical journey, I’ll be more than delighted to help you achieve your goals.
Thanks for your interest and I look forward to hearing from you.
